You cannot claim GST credits above the car limit.

The car limit is:

• used to work out depreciation deductions under tax law, and
• reviewed each financial year and may change.

When you buy a car, you can claim up to a maximum GST credit of one eleventh of the car limit (including GST). The car limit is $57,466 for the 2010-11 financial year and you can claim a maximum GST credit of $5,224 for cars above this limit.

The car limit applies to cars or motor vehicles designed to carry a load of less than 1 tonne and fewer than nine passengers. It does not include motor cycles.
